We Are Still Here

So, it has been a wild six months. I don't even know how to begin to update our blog and bring it back up to speed.

From September 7 (my last REAL post) to today, February 19, so much has happened. Owen has now grown into a precious, rascally little one year old. Clara is still a rocking kid, who still loves life and preschool. And, Adam and I are still here, attempting to keep up with our energetic babes.

You will just have to sit back and let me reminisce every once in a while.

But for now, I will just let you enjoy Owen turning ONE...

Owen Turns One!

Holy Cow, we made it. Adam and I gave each other a high-five on Owen's first birthday. Life with two kids - we are still here and still sane, somewhat.

Still wondering how we went from this...

To this, one year later...

Owen is his Daddy's little shadow. Wherever Adam is, Owen is right there with him. He cannot stand it when Adam leaves the room or does something without him. They are connected at the hip whenever Adam is home. Pretty darn cute, too.

How do you even begin to describe your child to someone? Seriously, it is impossible. Owen is an amazing little guy. He is curious, but not naughty. Sometimes, studying something so seriously on the floor, but doesn't pick it up. He is serious, but silly. The nurse at the doctor's office calls him a "Man-Baby" he looks just like a little man and can be a tough audience for anything goofy. But when you get him going, he is definitely a giggler. He is a charmer, but a ladies man. He can give anyone a sweet look but loves him some ladies. One day at Adam's office, he waved at each woman he saw, but as far as the men, he just stared them down.

Owen is not walking yet, he actually doesn't really have an interest. He will cruise the furniture with his fingertips and even let go but I really don't see him walking anytime in the near future. He has TWO walkers that he can push around the house but doesn't like them, in fact, Clara uses them instead. He will walk holding your hands but just laughs the entire time he is on his feet.

Owen had his well-baby check this week, two weeks late, but who's counting?

Owen is...

19 pounds, 13 ounces (10%)

The doctor seems happy with everything. Finally growing on a consistent curve. Unfortunately, he just may take after my side of the family in terms of height and stature. Oh well, at least he has his smile...

Four teeth on the top and four teeth on the bottom. Two molars are making their appearance - very slowly, as well as a couple others are trying to surface as well. He definitely lets me know about it.

Owen is now eating! After beginning solids at four months, dealing with gagging and vomit and several visits to the occupational therapist, I would say he is somewhat a good eater. He definitely has his favorites: pasta, bread and crackers (carbs: his Mother's child) and could live without fruits and veggies (again, his Mother's child) but he is eating. He will try anything on his plate, whether or not he will like it is another story...

No more bottle for this little boy, we have found our sippy cup combo that works for him so it was painless to get rid of it. I just threw them out and he never wondered about it.

As for the pacifier is concerned, he really doesn't need it. Although, Momma needs to talk on the phone to her customers so sometimes I am weak and give Owen "the Plug" if he is being noisy. We actually just forgot to give it to him at night and we recently realized that he hasn't had it in bed for about a week. I guess, I could throw those out, too.

We have definitely not baby proofed as much as we did with Clara. All we have are the cabinets locks in the kitchen and a gate on Clara's room and he seems fine with that. He is curious but I have Clara to help me watch him and she definitely has eyes in the back of her head when it comes to what Owen is doing and where he is.

Although, we were beyond blessed with new toys for his first birthday, he loves playing with tupperware, socks, and paper. But if I had to name his favorites it would be balls and books.

Owen will say dada (daddy) and at (cat) and dat (when he points) and ba (either ball or book) but verbally he is a whole bunch of random, manly sounds that we try to figure out daily.

Owen's lovely locks of hair have turned from jet black at birth to reddish brown, about the same color as mine. His hair grows crazy fast. I feel the need to keep it short for a couple of reasons. First of all, I don't want him looking like Squiggy. Second of all, I cannot resist when he comes back from the barber shop looking like this...

So, I have been out of the loop and haven't made time for blogging lately. I will update soon - promise!!! It is hard to run a family, household, and a new business with one arm. Stay tuned. I will update our blog very soon.

First Day of Preschool

Clara had her first day of preschool today. She was so excited and ready to go this morning. She woke up early and we made her a special breakfast of bacon, eggs, toast and fruit. When we got to her school she walked in to the classroom by herself and put her backpack up and went straight to work - on play-dough of course ;) I think Adam and I thought that it wouldn't be that easy but she wanted us to go! Too funny.

She had a great day - apparently she was the leader for circle time and she thought it was too cool to have snack with her friends - she can't remember any of their names - she just calls them her "new friends."

I asked her if she was scared - she said "Nope."
I asked her if she cried - she said "Nope."
I asked her if she liked school - she said "Yep, when can I go back?"

He is practicing to be a manly man. Owen moans, growls, burps and grunts - you know - manly noises. Chewbaca-like. Seriously. He is so noisy when he gets going sometimes you feel like you have to yell over him or just join him.

So some people might think that this is gross but I absolutely love to eat peanut butter straight out of the jar. I have passed this (probably disgusting) love to my sweet daughter. She requests this as a snack at least three times a week. That's my girl.

Playing in the Rain

Last week, we had incredible weather (with the exception of Monday where it was 107!) One day, we woke up to light rain showers and I thought Clara should play outside. Seriously - it was beautiful. Owen and I had a great time watching Clara splash and run around in the rain. She was soaking wet by the time we came in. Oh, and those pajamas are her very favorite - Christmas Dora pajamas from last Christmas. She will not let me get rid of them even though they are too small!

Kayla and Crystal

Tea Party

While Owen has attended MANY tea parties hosted by Clara, he never really participated until the other day. Clara loved every moment of it (Owen did, too) - she gave him plates, a bowl, a cup and play food. She thought he was just playing along pretending to eat. Little does she know that her wooden play food makes a pretty good teething toy, too!

Seven Months Old

Owen is seven months old!

Owen is now...

16 pounds 3 ounces

Still a little guy but he definitely has some chunky spots. Still in six month clothing and well on his way to nine month clothes. I got tired of buying two sizes of diapers (one size for day and one size for night) so I just decided to put him in size three completely.
Owen still drinks six ounces of milk every three hours. I have yet to find a sippy cup that he likes though! For nearly a month, he protested eating solids.
Never really enjoyed it anyway (but would eat a little) but lately flat out has refused to eat any kind of solids whatsoever. Yesterday, it dawned on me that Clara hated plastic baby spoons, so I tried one of our smallest silverware spoons. He ate two solid meals yesterday and one this morning. Hopefully this was the problem and he will continue to eat! Little Stinker!

Owen is truly a character and his little personality gets revealed more and more each day. Completely in love with Clara, he now can launch himself towards her and go in for a "hug." It surprises her each time he does it but she is still really good with him when he does.

He is very affectionate, loves to be held but only if you are standing or walking. You stop or sit he either fusses or wiggles to get down.

Owen learned how to sit up this month and also has figured out how to raise himself to a sitting position from laying down (which is still so weird to go into his room to get him after nap and see him sitting waiting for me instead of laying waiting for me.)

He woke up this morning with his second tooth - right next to his first.

You probably didn't even notice but Owen has had four hair cuts and needs another one. I think his next haircut will be from a barber shop - anyone know of a good one? I am not one of those people who will wait for my boys curls and keep them around because they are so cute. I have this weird need to keep his hair short. Unfortunately, I also want it spiky and a little punky. The natural spikes are gone. I have to run my fingers through it for it to do anything. Maybe it is time to start thinking about product...
Owen's new obsession is paper. Magazines, mail, books, my work papers, Clara's drawings. You name it - if he can wiggle to it, he will eat it.

We are in official baby-proofing mode. If you didn't see the video of him attempting to crawl, here it is. It is only a matter of time before he really figures it out - Sigh.Oh Boy!

Owen turned 7 months yesterday and today he decided he would attempt crawling. Attempt is the key word. While I won't call this crawling, I do think I need to re-baby proof the house like tomorrow. If he puts his mind to it, he can scoot a few feet if he is really determined to get something. Any and all paper is his favorite but so is the remote control. He will not sit still for anything - including his bottle. Something on his body has to always move - a hand, a foot, his leg - you name it. If you are holding him, he will either fuss to get down or launch himself to get somewhere. He is a mover and a shaker just like his Big Sis.

Early Morning Crafting

Crafting continues to be Clara's favorite activity. Give her glue, scissors, markers, crayons, paper and something "extra" to glue she is happy. One morning last week, right after she woke up around 7:30, she was determined to craft. I went in to get her and the first thing out of her mouth was "Mommy, I want to craft." So I let her at it before morning cuddles, breakfast or watching a show, she crafted until she ran out of pom-poms and buttons.

Open House

I held an Open House for my new Thirty One business and it was a huge success! I was so happy that so many friends, neighbors and family stopped by to say 'Hi and' also placed orders! It was so fun to see everyone and show off what I have been up to for the past few months. Enjoy the pictures!

We took Owen to his six month check up today. He charmed his way through the doctors office even with missing his morning nap. The paper on the doctor's office exam table was a definite hit with Owen. Now with sitting up, Owen has met all of his milestones - Yeah!

15 pounds 14 ounces (20%)
27 inches (70%)

He is still a long and skinny boy - nothing wrong with that!

He is almost the exact same size as Clara at that age which surprises me because I always thought boys were bigger. Oh well, he is perfect in every way!

Sitting Up!

After lots of practice and face-plants, Owen almost has this sitting up business figured out. I am still not far when he is sitting up because a nosedive is usually a given, but today he sat for nearly 15 minutes without a spill. He is a pretty good sport when it comes to falling too - he usually smiles or giggles.

This video is funny for so many reasons. The obvious - the face-plants, but this is how Clara likes playing with her brother - she enjoys playing "twins." She does whatever he does until she gets bored or distracted by something. It is really quite dear and Owen absolutely loves the extra attention from her.

Shake, Rattle and Gnaw

Today was a pretty noisy day in the Brewster house. Owen completely figured out the rattling thing. I couldn't tell you how long he rattled but he loved that he figured it out. He didn't even care that he was smacking himself in the face at the same time. He was having a blast!

Happy Half Birthday Owen!

Owen continues to be a happy, silly boy that we cannot get enough of. Although, this month brought lots of challenges including battling Salmonella for two weeks (yes, he got it too) and experiencing all that teething has to offer - pain, slobber, and crying, he is still the sweetest little thing.He is completely in love with Clara and always saves his biggest smiles and belly laughs for her. Owen is now

15 pounds 3 ounces

not the biggest weight gain but considering the two weeks of sickness - that's pretty good.

That is how much he weighed at the doctor from a sick visit yesterday, but we don't go for the "official" 6 month check up for a couple more weeks so I have no idea how he falls on the percentages. I think he will be on the small side...

But, it is not from lack of milk or food...(Yes, that is a pink bib - that's what you get for being a little brother)

Owen LOVES his milk. If I would let him, he probably would drink milk constantly. Right now, we are giving him 6 ounces every 2 - 2 1/2 hours. He also eats baby food once a day (almost a whole jar), usually after his first nap of the day. He tolerates peas, but really loves carrots, bananas and peaches. He refuses to eat anymore rice cereal or oatmeal. We have given him lots of table food, too - pasta, bananas, peaches, blueberries, bread, rice, beans - he just looks at us like we are crazy but we keep trying. I would much rather just give him table food like we did with Clara.

While no teeth have emerged, I can see a couple just under the surface. It is unusual if he doesn't have anything in his mouth. He is constantly chewing on something - toys, blanket, burp cloths, pacifier, the remote, me... Next subject...

Feet.

Boy, they are yummy.
He also has been working on sitting up. Owen loves the Bumbo but refuses to sit still in it. He twists and turns and leans...

He can balance for a little while...

but it doesn't take long before he slowly begins to lean forward...Checking his email...

Family Reunion, Part One

Every three years, my extended family (Dad's side) meets for a family reunion. Somewhere between Ohio and Texas - since half live here in Texas and the other half live in Ohio. We've have wonderful reunions usually at state parks, but this year we decided to change it up a bit and visit St Louis. St Louis is an awesome place to sight-see and explore. I have broken up the trip into three posts - we literally took over three hundred pictures - here are a few of our favorites.

Family Reunion, Part Two

So, with Owen being so little, we split the eleven hour drive into two days. Between not being a big fan of the car, not a good sleeper in the car and teething - our drive up there was interesting - Clara loves an adventure but Owen, on the other hand, has his own opinions. But, he was a trooper.

Ignoring the cries...Second stop: The Oklahoma border - Owen got hungry, how else do you warm a cold bottle but with coffee...
Yes, you read that right second stop. Our first stop was just thirty minutes from our house for a potty break. It was a slow drive...

We knew we truly made it to the heart of Oklahoma when we saw this guy at lunch...
Spurs and all.
And when you see this from the highway in the middle of nowhere Missouri, you gotta stop...
Lucky for us, it was located next to the "World's Largest Candy Store" or so they claim...We let Clara chose anything she wanted - after about two full laps of inspecting all the candy and what did she chose? Yep, a lollipop. Poor child. That was her lunch. We ended up just snacking all day in the car but she thought it was the best thing to have a lollipop for lunch. Poor little brother just got a clean pacifier to suck on...Seems like a theme this trip, but we also saw the "World's Largest Rocking Chair"
Oh, yeah. So, the first full day there all 36 of us invaded the Magic House. It was an amazing children's museum. It is located in an old Victorian home that was added on to in an incredible way. Each room had different interactive exhibits. It was a total hit with the kids. There was a three story beanstalk to climb (Clara was too timid to climb it), lots of "air" exhibits, sand and water discovery areas, a replica of the Oval Office, a construction site, and, yes, patriotic karaoke. We were there nearly four hours and didn't come close to seeing everything!
The end of a long day - wardrobe malfunction :)The next day we went to Grant's Farm. It is a beautiful place full of all sorts of animals - nearly 900 - including some exotic animals. We took a safari ride through the farm, bottle-fed goats, saw an elephant show, and took a carousel ride. Anheuser-Busch owns the farm and so we also got free beer. It definitely hit the spot since it was about 100 degrees.
This was about four o'clock in the afternoon - after our long day at Grant's Farm. She just couldn't go anymore...

Family Reunion, Part Three

Our third day, the entire group packed up to go to the City Museum in downtown St. Louis. Now, this has got to be the most outrageous museum I have ever been to. The 100% interactive museum is part fun-house, part playhouse, part art-house, part acid trip. There is no way to fully absorb this museum in one day trip let alone capture the amazing details on film. Adam and I have already decided we are going to return without the kids. This place was incredible. Seriously, there was MILES of tiles and tons of reclaimed materials. I will say though, to give you an idea of the wackiness of this place, that Clara road her first Ferris Wheel - on top of the ten story building. Yes, you read that right - ON TOP of the building. I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

Also, the cage-like tunnels are interactive and you actually can climb through them!There were several slides throughout the museum - some of which you didn't know where you would end up at the end. One was four stories tall! This one, which all four of us went on (Owen strapped to my chest in the carrier) was one story tall...So now we are on the roof of the museum. And, there is the Ferris Wheel...The best picture I could get of Clara on her first Ferris Wheel...The back of the school bus that hangs of the top of the building...

After all the crazy fun on the roof, we went down to create some of our own art...
Each afternoon, after the morning activity and nap time (well-deserved each day), all the kids got together to do crafts. We made visors, ornaments, decorated t-shirts, and several other things...
We also played lots of games...This is Clara's first game of BINGO - she won and chose a lollipop.On the day we left, after all the "official reunion activities" ended, Adam and I took the kids to see two more important St. Louis attractions before we headed back home.

The first, was of course the St. Louis Arch. In college, Adam and I drove cross-country and stopped to see the Arch. We actually went up inside the Arch and it was quite an experience. Not an experience that we wanted to have with Clara - who easily gets freaked out by "creepy things" (yes, the City Museum was in her opinion "creepy") and a five month old baby. But, all the same, we wanted her to see the "Silver Rainbow."Clara thought it was cool to touch it - she really wanted to climb it for some reason...
The second place, of course, was the St. Louis Anheuser-Busch Brewery. I mean, you can't come to St Louis with out a tour of it! It was one of the original Anheuser-Busch factories and was built in in 1876. The buildings were absolutely gorgeous and the grounds were beautiful. Clara was quite interested in the Clydesdale horses and the Dalmatian that hung out in the historic stables with the horses. The tour ended in the hospitality suite where we tasted the freshest beer we have ever had. Yummy.
The coldest part of the factory - luckily I had an extra towel that Clara could cuddle in and Owen had an extra shirt and sun hat to snuggle in...Bottling and Packaging Facility...Wow...

I highly recommend St Louis as a vacation spot - so much to do and see!

We had such a great time with all of our cousins, Aunts and Uncles!

We can't wait for the Ozarks in 2013!

Mystery Solved

Back to reality.

We had a wonderful vacation in St Louis at my family reunion. It was a week full of catching up with Aunts, Uncles, and cousins, sightseeing, driving - over 1400 miles to be exact. We came home with nearly three hundred pictures on our camera and I have yet to sort through them.

We are back.

Thank goodness we were even able to go. I am sure this post is familiar. Well, on Monday while in a museum in St Louis, I finally got a call from the pediatrician. After multiple tests, cultures, and a visit to a pediatric gastrointestinal specialist, we finally found out that Clara had a severe case of salmonella. Yep. Salmonella.

I wish it upon NO ONE!

I always knew salmonella was nasty but never that nasty. Like a few days of diarrhea and you were done (which mild cases are.) I also thought it was only food born - like with raw chicken. NOPE! While that is one way to contract Salmonella it is not the only way.

You can contract it from animals mainly reptiles but others, too. You can get it from any kind of poop (human or animal).

Apparently, Salmonella can live on ANY SURFACE - wet or dry, dirty or "clean."

It can continue to grow on ANY SURFACE for up to

FOUR WEEKS!!

Even worse, if the surface is wet, at room temperature, it can continue to grow for

MONTHS!!

Gross!

That means Clara could have picked it up ANYWHERE. The store, swimming lessons, our house, from the cats or a neighbors dog, at the park, a restaurant. You name it.

So, my advice to you - Wash your hands.

Five Months Old

Am I in a time machine? I have tried not to blink.

Owen is now five months old.

FIVE!

He has got to be the happiest, silliest, wiggliest, funniest, goofiest, sweetest little dude ever. Owen is very vocal and loves having conversations in his native tongue - Chewbacca talk.

Owen is now

14 pounds 8 ounces

My little man has grown into 6 month clothes, size 2 diapers and size 3 diapers at night.

Owen can now chug down five ounces every two and a half hours. He just might eat us out of house and home pretty soon. I feel as though I feed him constantly.

He has moved onto oatmeal cereal and seems to enjoy it but with this whole nasty sickness with Clara, introducing new foods has taken a backseat for a while. It is pretty funny though, when we feed him, we can't shovel it in fast enough. He gets frustrated eating is definitely not as efficient as drinking out of a bottle. But there is still lots of flirting on his part.We are also practicing with the sippy cup...
Sleeping is still going great - actually better. Four to five naps during the day and about 12 hours at night. We also just decided to stop feeding him at night. I always heard that by six months babies don't need the extra nutrients at night. So now, when he wakes up, we just plug him with the pacifier and that seems to make him just as happy.
He has been going through a phase where he refuses to roll over from his tummy to his back in bed and last night he finally did it. I mean he has been doing it since two and a half months and why he refused to do it in bed was beyond comprehension.

Teething. Ahh...You forget how miserable a kid can be. With bone pushing slowly through flesh, I mean do you blame them for screaming? I have tried many things but so far the best thing is this little Sophie Giraffe. He loves it. A squeaky toy for babies. It rocks. Err...squeaks.

Clara's New Obsession

For about a week and a half, we have been dealing with this sickness.

Cooped up in the house.

Going crazy.

During one of my 6AM trips to the store last week (before Adam leaves for work - I was scared to leave the house with possible explosions in my daughter's future) I stopped by the school supply aisle and picked up pair of scissors for Clara. I haven't attempted this with her but figured she was ready.

Boy was she ready.

She took to it like a fish to water. Show her once and she had it down. I decided to let her help me clip coupons and she thought it was the best thing ever.
I then gave her some construction paper and let her go to town.
We had nice pile of tiny bits of paper and so we made this...

I am so proud.

I hope my vacuum can keep up with her.

Fourth of July

So, we had originally planned a fun-filled Fourth of July weekend with our great friends. Well, that plan was obviously blotched by the numerous, fun-filled visits to the various bathrooms we have in our house by Clara (don't take the fun-filled part literally).

While we STILL don't know what is or was wrong with her after THREE visits to the doctor in 6 days - this sickness seems to slowly be leaving her system.

Excuse me while I go knock on wood.

We are all holding our breath since our vacation is creeping up on us VERY QUICKLY.

So, after putting the kids to bed (Clara, unfortunately didn't even last to 7:30 to enjoy a few sparklers) Adam and I did what every red-blooded American does on July4th, flip through the channels on the television wondering why we pay for 200 channels of "there's nothing on TV."

Around 9:30, we got the crazy notion to test out the fireworks Adam brought home last week.
And then things turned interesting...

Lately...

We have been a bit out of touch lately. Poor Clara has had a nasty bug - so nasty that I refuse to go into detail. Just know that Clara is hanging in there and no one else has gotten it.

THANK THE DEAR LORD ABOVE.

Between the fact that I thought I had some symptoms and trying to balance the sickness and a five month old who insists on putting EVERYTHING in his mouth, we sent Owen to stay with my parents for a few nights. Originally, it was just going to be for one night (because the sickness was DAY AND NIGHT) but my Dad brought him home and, no joke, three hours later, he had to come back to pick him up.

We just keep thinking - maybe this is the end (of the sickness) but - NO!!! - seven days later, Clara is still having issues.

Now that Adam is home for the long weekend, Owen is back home with us so it has been much easier to keep up with the laundry, disinfecting, and cuddling. We just tag team the kids.

Our pediatrician has done all sorts of testing - Crypto, Rotovirus, E Coli, Giardia, and several parasites. While not all the tests are in, we still don't know what is going on.

Thankfully, Clara is a water-holic and we have had no problems keeping her hydrated. Her appetite is slowly coming back. She is also asking to do crafts again (that's my girl!)

Hopefully we are towards the end of this!!!

Unfortunately, Clara missed an entire week of swim lessons (where I think she picked this up) and we had to cancel plans with some of our best friends - our annual Fourth of July celebration together. We were completely bummed about this. So you have heard of Christmas in July, maybe we will celebrate the Fourth in December! What do you think Shelly and Joe???

Second Haircut

Owen is not even 5 months old and he has had two haircuts. Well, trims. No pictures (again!) of this haircut. Although Adam was home, he was the one who attempted to keep Owen still while I attempted to not cut Owen with the scissors. The picture above is a bit deceiving - we took a lot more off than we were able to catch.

I got tired of tucking his hair behind his ears and it is long enough where it actually lays down for the most part (which kills me because I have had nearly five months of my little "Punky Brewster") but the problem with that is we have to continually brush it to the side or he looks like Squiggy from Laverne and Shirley...So, we did take about a half an inch of the top so we will see what it looks like in the morning...

Adam and I know how incredibly lucky we are that we have two amazingly healthy and happy children. We also know how rare it is to have two children that love each other AND like each other (hopefully this will continue...)

It is a given that Owen loves Clara, but Clara actually really cares about her brother. She is concerned about him, plays with him, gives him toys, sings to him and lets me know when I let him cry too long (MOM!! Owen NEEDS YOU NOW!!!)

Clara is my little shadow. Clara is my little helper. Clara is my little mini-me. She loves to imitate me - always has.

You may remember THIS POST nearly two years ago. Isn't Clara so tiny and sweet - I could just gobble her up!

Laundry is still a constant in our house - especially now that we have another miniature person adding to the mix. We still have the crappy (but still working - knock on wood) dryer but I have smartened up and have just refilled that very Downy bottle with water. Spray, fluff and hang. Repeat.

Clara had her first overnight adventure with Adam's parents last week. She had a blast. Adam, Owen and I drove to Hideaway last Friday to spend some time with Granny, Papa and Great Ga-Ga and to bring Clara home.

Here are a few pictures from our quick trip...While we were there, we stopped by the local peach orchard to pick peaches. (Here is a link to the pictures from last year - can't believe I was 15 weeks pregnant when we went last August!) Unfortunately, we were about a week early so we weren't able to pick but everybody took time to explore the orchard for a while (well, minus Owen and myself - it was entirely too hot for him!)
Clara was in great spirits and excited to go home after a jam-packed, fun-filled couple of days. Clara is pass the point that she falls asleep in the car. We thought we would just do an early bedtime. When we got home she wanted to watch a show. She sat on the couch and this is what happened...
Now, Clara is nearly three and a half years old. She has NEVER fallen asleep in front of the television, nor does she just fall asleep anywhere. She has always been a light sleeper. I can actually count the number of times she has fallen asleep on our couch - THREE! One time she just had surgery and still had anesthetic still in her system, the second time she was really sick, and this was the third time!

I don't know what Granny and PaPa did, but we could not stir her.

I turned her show off and turned on something else, turned all the lights on, played with Owen right next to her, he screamed literally two feet from her head, we poked her, talked to her, tickled her - you name it. She would not wake up. Finally about three hours later we must have hit a good nerve when we mentioned food - dinner. She woke up!

The Beauty of the Float

We seriously are feeling like we are melting the second we step outside. Every chance we get, we bring out the kiddie pool, sprinklers or slip and slide.

Unlike Adam, who is a total fish and LOVES to swim, I love the water but would much rather just hang out and float. I think Clara inherited Adam's fish traits because she is in constant motion anytime she is in water.

One day last week, I thought I would teach Clara the beauty of the float.

Four Months Old

Our little man is now four months old.
(I know, I am a bit late for this post -nearly two weeks - we just went to the doctor today.)

I'm not even going to do the whole "OMG my baby is 4 months and time is going so fast!" thing because I think it's a given that I'm all "OMG!" about it. 4 MONTHS! HOW?

He amazes me everyday at how social he is, yet he is so observant. He is completely 100% in love with his sister. Clara, in turn, is 99.9% in love with her brother. I couldn't ask for anymore.

Owen is now
13 pounds 11 ounces (25%)
25 1/2 inches long (75%)

We have another long and skinny kid. He is nearly the same size as Clara was at this age, though his thighs seem so much more brilliantly juicy and edible.

He stepped it up this last month and seems to have really grown. While 3 month clothes still fit, I have recently brought out the 6 month clothes.

Oddly enough, Owen eats a bit less than he did before. He now only takes about 3 to 4 ounces at a time, but still eats every two hours. We have begun rice cereal - not sure how much he actually gets down to his tummy because he is too busy giggling and laughing while I am feeding him.

Silly Boy.
Sleeping hasn't changed much. He stills loves it. Still waking up at least once a night. Sometimes more when he gets stuck somewhere in the crib (just installed the breathable bumpers, hopefully that will help...) While Momma loves her sleep and really can't remember how sleeping for an entire night uninterrupted feels like, I do know that he won't need me every night forever. This is still the only time I really have alone with him.

He has also developed this new cry that I need to get on video. If you put the sound of a cat fight, fingernails on a chalkboard and the sound of a mosquito in your ear in the blender - that is the sound of Owen's new cry. Can't wait to hear it can you?

Owen is definitely teething. Drooling, chewing, fussing, crying, you name it.
At least he has portable chew toys...He really is a happy boy though.
He is so fun to have around and just really goes with the flow.

Rhyme Time

Well, if you have spent anytime with Clara lately, you know very well that she LOVES to rhyme.

I mean...

LOVES TO RHYME

It feels as though we "playing a rhyming game" (as Clara calls it) all the time. In the bathtub, in the car, playing at the park, in the stroller, at the store...

Well, today at Hobby Lobby, Clara and I were playing a rhyming game. I always let her pick the word that we rhyme. And sometimes she gets so excited that she says these words LOUDLY.

We were rhyming for about 10 minutes (that's a lot of rhyming let me tell you) and she decided to rhyme the word

My child said the 'F' word LOUDLY in the middle of Hobby Lobby.

Clara-isms and Survivor: Brewster-Style

Here are a couple of funny things Clara has said in the last week...

Setting: The Laundry Room
Mommy is spraying stained clothes with OxyClean while Clara is hopping and dancing around just because it is fun.

Clara: "Hey, Mommy, that spray breaks down dirt."
Mommy: "Huh? How do you know that?"
Clara: "I saw a commercial."

Setting: Driving in the Car
Another car quickly gets in front of our car (which surprises me) so I hit the brakes pretty hard.

Clara: "Mommy, be careful."
Mommy: "Sorry, Mommy isn't being a very good driver today."
Clara: "Yeah. Grandma drives better than you."

(What?? Doesn't she know that Grandma taught me how to drive???)

That's my girl.

By the way, Adam was out of town all last week and so I was in survival mode. God Bless Single Moms!!! By Thursday, I was a tad bit looney (and out of wine).

I decided to wean Owen from swaddling since Adam was gone and I knew I would have a few long nights and I didn't want to bother him. The weaning went great and only took two nights (one VERY LONG night - I love my coffee!). He is now no longer my little sweet potato but my little rollie pollie baby. Here he is sleeping with a toy he had a death grip on (the little red ring) I could not get it out of his hand - he even woke up with it still in his hand an hour later!

So, in addition to being in survival mode last week, our satellite decided to go out. Well, at least the HD receivers inside the house. The only one working was the receiver in the garage - the television Adam uses to exercise and use the elliptical machine. Well, at 8:30 in the morning, it was already 86 degrees. Not that we watch TV all day but Momma needs her time to wake up and for the first couple of hours in the morning that is how I do it. We veg. in the living room with my coffee and Clara with her milk. Well, Clara wanted to still veg. so I let her in the warm garage...not sure why she felt the need to have a blanket but a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do for her Curious George.

I had two New Years Resolutions this year. The first, was to have the guts to wear a bikini again (something I haven't done since before Clara was born) and, Second, to run (not walk) a 5K sometime this year. Granted, I made these resolutions when I was eight months pregnant tells you that I was feeling a bit ambitious. Well, somehow, I have done both.

I have been training for the 5K since the day Owen turned 6 weeks old and was given the go ahead to workout. I was determined to do it. Thanks to my friend, Ashley (miss you girlie!) I was introduced to the Couch-to-5K program. It was such a great beginning training program. I also had a incredibly awesome running buddies in my friends, Leah and Jodi.

Well, yesterday was the day of DadFest. Thankfully, it was overcast and breezy. Our guess was we would finish in about 45 minutes. I am proud to say we finished in just over 37 minutes - 12 minute miles, baby!!!!!

I felt really good until the afternoon when dehydration set in. I definitely learned my lesson with that! That headache was killer.

We are definitely doing another 5K in the fall and next year, I may set my sights on a 10K or more...(Seriously, Deanna, can I tag along with you??)

Rolling, Rolling, Rolling

Owen started rolling over a month ago. He always seemed to surprise me when he did it so I have not gotten it on video. But lately, he has been a little rollie pollie. He is getting to the point where it is pretty easy for him. He can roll from front to back and back to front and can roll both to the left and right (shocking me because Clara didn't roll until she was four and a half months!) Owen used to HATE tummy time so I am assuming that was his solution - roll. Now, he purposefully rolls onto his tummy when he is falling asleep. It is so sweet!

Mmm...Cereal

We have yet to go to Owen's four month appointment (it's next week) but that didn't stop us from introducing cereal to him. Our first attempt didn't go so well - he was WAY TO TIRED. Here is the evidence...

So, we waited until the next day to try again. It was hilarious. Just about every bite oozes out and then he smiles. Honestly, I don't know why I even bothered with the bib, it just ran down his chin and neck. Yuck! Forgive me for the video, I was trying to juggle the camera and the spoon at the same time.

Slip and Slide

Ah, the Slip and Slide. I have great memories growing up of our bright yellow slip and slide. When I saw one on sale for $5, I knew I had to get it. Clara and I brought it home and we were both super excited to try it out. As soon as Owen went down for a nap, we ran outside to set it up. I explained the importance of the run and slide and decided to show Clara exactly how to do it.

There is a reason the box said "For ages 5 to 12." Ouch.

Owen was in the kitchen with us so we were wondering who she was talking to. It was our very old and, extremely, fat cat Oliver. She was telling him a story. Hello, my name is Owen and I am a hoarder of pacifiers.

Lately, I have been wondering where all of Owen's pacifiers have been going. I don't leave them around the house. I always make sure there is a "Just in Case" pacifier in his crib. But for some reason, I just felt like they were disappearing. I even bought more about a month ago because I always felt I was loosing them.

I only knew half of it. They were disappearing but someone was making them disappear.

I went in to get Owen up from one of his naps today and I couldn't find his pacifier that I left him with. I looked all around and decided to move his crib on a whim.

BUSTED!

I found a stash of pacifiers in a little pile between the wall and his crib. Seriously. They were in a pile.

Now I am wondering when this obsessive hoarding began...

I wasn't sure how Owen would react to the kiddie pool - he LOVES his baths - but cool water in the sunshine? I thought he would have the same reaction as Clara...Yep, Clara hated the water.

I didn't even put a swimsuit on him - just the swim diaper, which, by the way, was HUGE. Even with all the extra chub, the smallest size swim diaper looks like this...

He loved every second of it. Clara loved having him in there with her. She cannot wait to have him interact with her more and this is just one step closer to playing together.

Owen enjoyed it so much, that we brought the Bumbo out...

I can't wait to see him in a big pool!

First Haircut

So this may not be the most flattering position to be photographed in but Owen definitely has the beginnings of some super-yummy chunkiness. Look how big he is getting!!!!

I never got to enjoy chubby thighs with Clara - they just grew long (and they are still growing) - seriously, she is going to be taller than me by the time she is ten years old. But, I have been loving the pudgy, skwoosh of Owen's rolls.

Of course, he gets it honestly. After all, Adam was a bit husky and I apparently had six chins according to my mom. But that is another post for another day...

Happy Birthday Adam!

We celebrated Adam's birthday yesterday by hanging out around the house and just enjoying each other. He had the pleasure of watching almost an entire Rangers game without interruptions from the kids (I say almost - hey, we tried to let him relax as much as we could!) Unfortunately, the Rangers didn't win!

I made him a chocolate cake with pink icing (don't laugh, Clara picked the color out). She even decorated it with rainbow sprinkles (again, Clara's idea). I wasn't very quick with the camera - I was holding Owen while attempting to take pictures so this is my only picture...We love you Adam! Happy 31st!

Since we have been taking Owen to the chiropractor, we have noticed a lot of progress during tummy time. He holds his head up more and begins with his head straight up or at least looking directly in front of him. As he gets more tired, he goes back to what he used to look like. Now, it is all about getting his muscles to be equally as strong.It is a such a relief to know that he isn't in pain anymore!

So, Summer doesn't officially start for another month but let's face it - we live in Texas. It gets hot in April and stays hot until November. Last Sunday, it hit 90 degrees so we broke out the kiddie pool. Boy, did it feel good. I think we spent the entire day outside just hanging out. While Owen did sport his little bathing suit, he didn't get in. He was completely satisfied just watching the rest of us play.

The Great Adjustment

I took Owen to the chiropractor last week. What prompted me, was that he favors his right side, especially on his tummy and sitting up. I really wanted a second opinion because it just wasn't getting any better. I just kept getting told to do more tummy time when I always thought he was in pain while I was doing it.

The poor boy had two vertebrae turned in his neck, right next to each other - going opposite ways - pinching his nerves, another one turned halfway down his back and his pelvis was twisted. Poor baby! As soon as he was adjusted he cooed and fell asleep!

Owen has never passed out like this in the car...

EVER!

We are going back every week for a while. I am so happy I took him. He just seems more relaxed and comfortable.

My Little Sweet Potato

Why? IMPOSSIBLE to bust out in anyway. AND, it is super easy to use. I needed to get something that still contained his arms that allowed for him to move them. Ideally, I would like to fully wean him from swaddling altogether, but I like my sleep too much. So, for now, Owen looks like a giant sweet potato when he sleeps. Check out their website.

Three Months Old

Our little man is now three months old. He gets more and more fun everyday. Owen is such a busy, observant little guy who seems to do new things each day.

Owen Davis is now...

12 pounds 8 ounces

He has doubled his birth weight!
I love that he has little chubby parts that I can squeeze and zerbert.
The thighs, I could just eat up those little thighs!
Although, Owen has two newborn onesies that still fit him, he is finally in three month clothes.
During the day, he chugs down between 4 and 5 ounces every two hours - yep - EVERY two hours. The boy likes to eat. The only thing he like better than eating, is sleeping. He loves his sleep. But, like Clara, he likes his bed. Put him in his sleep sack, turn on his aquarium and sound machine and he is gone. I just put him in bed wide awake and I just leave the rest up to him. About three or four times a week he sleeps from about 6:30 or 7 until 5:30 or 6. The rest of the time, he wakes up briefly for a quick bottle.

I get asked a lot if I do anything to his hair - the answer is no, can you imagine if I did? I just run my fingers through it and this is the result...
Some days it is a bit more wild than others...
I love his hair. It is a work of art!

He has discovered his hands and man they are tasty.
They are always around for a little entertainment, too!
Tummy time still is no fun. Although, the first minute he shows off...

He has started giggling. It is the most precious sound. Check it out.

He also has rolled over. It is his little protest for being on his belly. He did it everyday for about a week and hasn't done it since. I have yet to get it on video.

Clara's Trapeze Tryouts

Clara's Uncle Mark and Aunt Gretchen gave a swing to Clara for her birthday. She has thoroughly enjoyed this swing from the minute Adam hung it in our tree. She has gone above and beyond the typical hanging out and going back and forth. She has perfected several "cool tricks" as she likes to call them. It seriously is like watching a trapeze artist. She is amazingly graceful - pretty impressive for a three year old!

Cottonwood Art Festival

Today, we walked over to the Cottonwood Art Festival. We try to go each time it is held (twice a year) and we have made nearly every time since we moved to our neighborhood six years ago. It is always so much fun. This year, was even more so since Clara is now old enough to participate in several of the activities. She chose to do a couple of crafts - tile painting and hat making. Owen was very interested in watching, dreaming of the day he can dig in, too! Enjoy the pictures!

Clara loves Owen. Owen loves Clara. How long will this last? Who knows - I am hoping forever - but I am not holding my breath.

Clara, an arts and crafts virtuoso, has enjoyed sharing her creativity with her little brother. It is really pretty funny because he always looks like he is listening and is so interested in what she is doing.

Yesterday, he was her canvas for her stickers. Oh yeah, covered head to toe in stickers.

Today, he spent 20 minutes (a record amount of time) in his Bumbo watching Clara intently, listening to her explain (seriously in detail) how to make necklaces and bracelets with pipe cleaners and beads. He also appeared to talk back with little coos and squeals while she was working. While I am now kicking myself for not getting it on video, I do have pictures. Too funny!

I get a kick out of combing Owen's hair. Since, normally it stands up in a sort of mo hawk, I like to see what it would be like if it was a bit more conservative - all he needs now is a tie and a briefcase.

Sadly, only because he is growing so fast, Owen has outgrown his newborn pajamas. So, I broke out the three month size. They almost fit. Here he is staring happily at his new friend, the vent, after his bath...

For a while now, Owen has really loved ceiling fans. And he still does. You can walk him from room to room and his little head will whip around to look for the fans. Well, as of yesterday, he has a new friend. His reaction to it is priceless.

Crafty Clara

Give Clara something to glue and she is happy. Seriously. You name it and she will glue it. Buttons, google eyes, seashells, pictures out of magazines, pasta, beans, trash. The list goes on. She loves glue sticks and can go through a stick in about 30 minutes flat.

I thought I would try introducing her to white glue. I hyped it up. Only to find out we were out. Darn. Great, Stacey. I didn't want to let her down so I dug around the house and found the next best thing. Tacky glue. Really. Why? It doesn't ooze out as fast as Elmer's glue. She can squeeze as hard as she can and it will not ooze out. Perfect for teaching her to only use "one dot" like I taught my kindergartners. She is getting pretty good, too.

On Sunday, we spent the morning outside enjoying the weather and getting our hands dirty (well, everyone but Owen - he just hung out and watched). Clara has been in heaven exploring the backyard, discovering new things and old forgotten toys in her rock pit. (Yes, we have a rock pit instead of a sand box - super cool!)

Mommy-Clara Date

On Saturday, Clara and I had a special date. We got all dressed up and went to see Cinderella the play at Casa Manana. We (somehow for $12) had front row seats and saw all the action up close and personal. After the play, we went out to eat in downtown Fort Worth to Gloria's. She thought it was the greatest thing to be out to eat when it was "getting really dark outside", dressed up with Mommy. She acted so grown up and ordered for herself and also asked for more water when she needed more. Too cute! We ate on the patio while coloring and people watching.

We had a great time. So much so, I got season tickets to another local children's theater. I am really looking forward to our monthly Mommy-Clara dates!

Gorgeous Weather

We have had the most gorgeous weather lately. We have taken advantage of it by hanging out in the backyard as much as we can. The kids both really enjoyed hanging out today. Clara and I played stickers for a while before she decided to dig in the dirt.

Last weekend, Adam and I did a bunch of yard work. In addition to planting a few new shrubs and flowers, we FINALLY got around to starting our vegetable and herb garden. Better late than never, right? While at the nursery, we picked up a container of live ladybugs. The package said it contained over 1000 live little ladies - it definitely felt like it. When we opened the package, it took no less than 20 minutes to release them! They just kept coming and coming! Clara was fascinated - as was I.

Two Months Old

Life has been great, wonderful, busy, crazy, you name it. And Owen Davis has just gone with the flow.

Owen Davis is now...
10 pounds 8 ounces
23 inches long

He has gained about a pound and a half!

Amazingly, my little boy is still pretty petite. About 20th percentile in weight. Although he has outgrown newborn diapers (about a week ago), he is still rocking the newborn and 0-3 month clothes.

Speaking of rocking...the hair. THE HAIR! Do I need to say anymore? It is much more golden with a reddish tint and doesn't show many signs of thinning as of late. I think it has also grown a bit longer too!

He is a little character when it comes to eating. Like Clara, he doesn't like distractions or interruptions while he drinks his milk. God forbid, I have to say something to Clara or Adam and I have a conversation. But when it comes to Clara, he really likes to listen to her. Especially, when she sings - he actually doesn't like it when I sing and lets me know (I don't blame him). We have been in the car and he has been screaming and you know who calmed him down? That's right, Clara. She made up a lullaby on the spot and he quieted down and stayed quiet as long as she sang! Too sweet!

He is also the only baby in the world who rarely sleeps in the car or swing or stroller. Owen must be still while he sleeps and LOVES his room. Put him in bed and he is happy. He has also made Adam and I very happy it comes to sleeping. He is now, very regularly, sleeping 12 hours with just one wake up to have a few ounces then he is right back down. We feel pretty rested but really feel lucky that we have another good sleeper!

He has graduated to the kitchen sink. Owen loves to take baths. I mean LOVES it. Put the boy in warm water, see a smile and a sweet little jig.

You can almost have a conversation with this little man, too. He loves to coo and squeal. I swore today he was imitating me and conversing with me. Between him and Clara, Adam and I won't be able to get a word in edgewise!

Owen's eyes are still dark blue and haven't changed much in the last couple of weeks. So, we will see...

Oh, and if you didn't notice - he loves the fan. He only had eyes for the fan today...

He also loves to play with his tongue. It seems to always be out!

My Newborn Must Haves

So, I have a couple friends who are expecting their first babies and I wanted to be sure to share with them (and for me to remember) my newborn must haves. Clara was a trial and error baby - what first born isn't though? I learned as I went along about how to soothe her. Owen, on the other hand, I was prepared.

Notice, all six things help babies sleep better. There is a reason for that - babies sleep, but only for short spans of time. Each of my must haves was recommended by another friend, a complete stranger or a doctor. I didn't discover them by myself - but I know I could not have a child without these! Lord knows, Mommy needs her sleep. Especially, this Mommy.

As soon as I found out I was pregnant with Owen, I made a short punch list about my must haves and made sure I had all of them before he came home.

The Miracle Blanket

The most awesome piece of fabric ever. It is, a baby straight jacket. Seriously. Babies love to be swaddled. Babies also have an amazing ability to wiggle out of any swaddle, double swaddle, triple swaddle, or even duct taped swaddle. Both my babies love(d) to be swaddled TIGHT. Once they bust out of that swaddle - they woke up. This blanket seriously lives up to it's name. Owen has four miracle blankets. No joke.

The Video Monitor

I remember it vividly. Adam and I were registering at Babies R Us for Clara and we were trying to decide about a monitor. We were joking about how ridiculous and seemly unnecessary it was to have to hear AND see your baby. A complete stranger stopped us and literally talked to us about how awesome it was to be able to see your child and not just hear them. So, we registered for it, thinking, how great is it really? Uh, it rocks. You can see before you go in if they really need you or are they just getting comfortable. It helped so much when we were trying to sleep train Clara. And now, to have two of the same monitor. When they are both sleeping, I can just switch back and forth between the two and be able to see both kids without having to carry around two receivers.

The Crib Music Box

Doesn't matter what one you get, just get it and stick with the same one early. We have the Fisher Price Aquarium (thanks to my friend Megan who bought this for Clara before she was born - she is now on her second one). We used it from day one with both kids (Owen doesn't even have a mobile in his crib - he has the ceiling fan but he has the music). Every time we put the kids down for a nap or to sleep at night we turned on the music. Clara hears the music and associates it with sleep. In the middle of the night, as soon as she could reach it, she would push the music and it would soothe her back to sleep. It rocks.

The Zippered Crib Sheet

All I can say is "Have you ever tried to change a crib sheet?" Well, if you are five feet tall, you could pull a muscle just trying to. This just makes life just plain easier. Get past the adorable prints or coordinating sets that other crib sheets have - you don't need them. While they have a few cute designs, Clara had the white sheets and Owen has the organic. Honestly, how are you going to juggle a screaming, barfing baby at three in the morning with one hand while attempting to change a sheet with the other? Well, with the sheets you can do just that.

Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child by Marc Weissbluth

I also call this book the Sleep Bible. Oh, the wisdom in this book. It was a God-Send with Clara and it really showed me how to be patient and when to draw the line when it came to sleep training - she did not nap during the day very easy. It took a while. This book helped! I used his techniques from nearly day one with Owen and I just watch for his clues. He loves to sleep - day and night. This book just helped me figure out when.

The Sound Machine

This is probably the best investment we have made with both kids. Thanks to my friend Rebecca, who recommended it, I bought this for Clara at 6 weeks. I gawked at the price, but it has been worth it. It is portable (take it to Granny's house, take it on vacation, etc.) It really drowns out noise. We live in an old house in which every floorboard creaks and the walls are thin. Adam and I probably would have gone crazy with watching television on practically mute or whispering our conversations. Clara cannot nap without it. Owen uses it day and night (remember, his sister is a rambunctious toddler).

Easter Morning

We woke up Easter Morning excited to see what the Easter Bunny brought the kids. He hid the baskets in the house and we had a little hunt for the baskets. Clara found Owen's basket first - it was hidden in his swing. It took a while to find Clara's basket. It was hidden in the bathtub!

If you are wondering, Owen did not get any candy this year. Instead his eggs were stuffed with new socks and pacifiers.

Clara got lots of craft supplies and a huge (pardon the pun) hit - Giant Chalk!

Clara was so excited to dig in, there was literally no stopping her. Adam and I just decided that we might as well let her - at least we would both be home to tag team the candy crazies! She ate every piece of candy in her basket - luckily the chocolate bunny was hollow!

She had her first Cadbury Egg and enjoyed every last bite!
